The courts

Civil claims of substance are brought in the Supreme Court of Belize. Appeals go to the Court of Appeal, and from there to the Caribbean Court of Justice as the final appellate court.

Procedure

The Supreme Court Rules govern the conduct of claims, including statements of case, disclosure, witness statements and case management. Directions carry deadlines, and missing them has consequences.

Costs

Belize follows the general common-law approach in which costs may follow the event, so an unsuccessful party can be ordered to contribute to the other side's costs. That risk belongs in any decision to litigate.

Interim relief

Injunctions and other interim orders are available where the circumstances justify them, and applications are often time-sensitive. Early advice matters where assets or property may be dealt with.

Enforcement across borders

A judgment obtained in one country is not automatically effective in another. Where a defendant or their assets sit in California, enforcement needs to be planned as part of the strategy, not after judgment.
