The three things that go wrong.
Layer order
Thin coats, cured individually. Two thin beats one thick every time.
Where the apex sits
About a third back from the free edge. Too far forward and it snaps.
Curing
Every layer cures fully before the next goes on.
Formula
What TPO-free means, plainly.
TPO is a photoinitiator — the ingredient that makes gel harden under a lamp. It works well, which is why it was used so widely.
The European Union reclassified TPO and prohibited it in cosmetic products, including nail gels, from 1 September 2025.
What that means for you
- Selling into the EU: your gel needs to be TPO-free. That is the law, not a preference.
- Selling into Great Britain: GB is on its own separate timeline, with a later cut-off for placing new products on the market and a sell-through window for stock already in the chain. The dates are not the same as the EU's — check the current GB guidance for your situation before you rely on it.
- Working in a salon elsewhere: TPO-free is increasingly what clients ask for, and what distributors will stock.
- Building a brand: starting TPO-free avoids reformulating the whole range later.
Where Unigel stands
45 of the 52 products currently in the retail catalogue are TPO-free, and formula status is shown on every product page rather than buried in a description. TPO-free versions can be specified for private-label production.
