Why First-Generation Students Need More Than Tuition Help
Apr 23, 2026 · by Maria Gonzalez
College acceptance letters are just the beginning. First-generation students face unique challenges — from imposter syndrome to not knowing how to navigate financial aid — that tuition alone can't solve.
At Alonzo Foundation, we've spent more than a decade walking alongside students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. What we've learned is that financial support, while essential, is only one part of the equation.
The Hidden Costs Nobody Talks About
Tuition and housing are the obvious costs. But first-gen students also face expenses their peers may not: professional clothing for internship interviews, technology for coursework, transportation to campus jobs, and the emotional toll of navigating an unfamiliar world without a family roadmap.
Our scholarship recipients tell us that the mentorship component of our program — being paired with a college graduate who has walked a similar path — is often as valuable as the financial award itself.
What We Can All Do
Supporting first-generation students means more than writing a check. It means showing up at college fairs, mentoring, and making sure our community's brightest students know they belong in every room they enter.
